Cavtat (pronounced "tsavtat") is a harbor town on the Adriatic coast of Croatia boasting a history that goes back to the 6th century BC. But today's earliest structures date only to the Middle Ages. Hah!
My mother and I stayed here for four lovely days in 2009 while her car was being made roadworthy again for us to continue our Balkan road trip. I think you'll agree we couldn't have been given a more delightful place for the normally reliable old clunker to break down.
Here you see the bell tower of the baroque St Nicholas Church, as well as a few of the awnings of the many bars and restaurants lining the harbor.
This is a long view of the town from the northern peninsula. Look how crystal clear the water is! [As usual, all images can be enlarged with a click.]
I don't mean to make you drool, but this was the view from our pleasing private apartment rental that we were so very fortunate to stumble on. The food at all the restaurants we sampled here was delicious and easy on the pocket book.
This view from the boat we took shows how beautifully Cavtat nestles in the coastal hills.
Watching the sun set from the promenade was the perfect way to end the day.

What a beautiful place! My son is taking his family to Croatia in a couple of weeks' time - I'll tell him about Cavtat.
The scenes and photos are beauts. Francisca, I aways find it amazing at the amount of travelling you do.
What a wonderful piece of luck "having" to spend four days in this beautiful place. It looks fabulous, and I did drool. :o)

Such a lovely place and beautiful shots!
C is for...
Eh, Croatia is so beautiful! I used to go there (actually I used to go to Yugoslavia) as a girl and I do adore this country!
By the way, the person in Bran is not my husband - it was all the time someone on this stairs and I don't even know who it was the person in my picture(hope he'll forgive me!)

Beautiful photos! Especially the last.
Your pictures always fascinate me.
Loved the last picture, so captivating.
OOoh love this. So much XXth century charm...
Very nice place. Lucky you to get stranded there.
Lovely. A friend and I were just talking over the weekend about dream holidays and it seems we both dream of Croatia. It may become a reality.
So, I'm suspicious. What did you do to your mother's car so you could spend time here. :))
Now that's a roadtrip!! And a great place to need car repairs (wasn't hard to make lemonade out of that lemon was it?).... and as for the age -- I felt pretty silly sometimes writing about "old stuff" -- from the 1600s or 1700s -- here in the US.
Such a fantastic and beautiful place, Francisca, and certainly the ideal place to have one's car develop a problem! Love your photos as always! Hope your week is going well!

Well you did make me drool. What a dreamlike place to have a car breakdown.
Your pictures are simply gorgeous.
What an absolutely beautiful place!
Absolutely gorgeous place! Just as beautiful as Italy's Portofino area!
Wow this place is great! ^_^

what luck breaking down there - it's a bit of heaven. that water is unbelievably clear. nice photos Francisca. the light is lovely.
Croatia, wow, i love to go there too! My best friend while in Strasbourg is from Croatia, it would have been so lovely to visit.
Oh gosh, now I have a new place I'd like to visit (not that I needed to add to that list!). I had to laugh, your key to pronounce the name wasn't any better for me than the actual written name - I couldn't say either! These are downright lovely.
i wouldn't mind getting stranded in a beautiful place like this one.
How nice! Gorgeous place.
Beautiful scenery Francisca.
thanks for showing us this piece of heaven. i love the buildings by the coast--what a perfect spot to watch the sunset.
I like that stained natural board walk. Some how timber makes it nicer than concrete.
The unexpected holdup in our lives sometimes turn out to be great memories:) Lovely pics, Francesca!
Photos full of atmosphere. Your story is a pleasure to read, as always.
The adriatic coast from Croatia is famous in Europe as a holiday destination.
If you're going to have car trouble, that looks like the place to do it!
lovely COASTAL town.

What a beautiful place to be stranded! Sometimes a journey's detour is the most memorable part of the experience.
I loved this experience! Thanks for sharing the beauty.
Oh heavenly........love it.
Wow, what an incredible place to be stranded. I'd love to spend a few days there - great photos.
Thanks so much for sharing these. They make me wish I could travel more. Beautiful!
I am loving the last photo! Looks like a wonderful place to sit and lose yourself in the beauty and serenity of the area.
I feel like I've just taken a lovely vacation, Francisca! This place looks so relaxing and every view so pretty! You sure know how to take a vacation right ;D
Definitely on my wish-list to visit now!
Are you sure this was an 'accidental' breakdown?

This is another good example of the unfairness of life. I always break down in the middle of nowhere in places inhabited by howling creatures and long slithery thingys...
I'm surprised that you ever left that place! What a paradise!
What beautiful photos of an amazing place! I'd love to see it in person someday. Thanks for posting it. Hope you are having a good week.
Beautiful place. Very scenic and peaceful.
It's so beautiful. I really hope to see it in person one day.
