[SkyWatch] On the Road in Romania

Today I offer two drive-by shots taken in the countryside of Romania for SkyWatch Friday.

The bright yellow rape field contrasts nicely against the gray sky.

Romania, 2011

We had to look up towards the sky to spot a number of these large nests with mama and baby storks up on top of streetlamps and power poles. Nice to see them back. These birds had disappeared for some time because the use of pesticides like DDT had weakened the shell of eggs so the mothers had crushed them. A testament to the resilience of nature when given a little wiggle room.

Oh, that's why we didn't see any storks in The Netherlands. How wonderful to know they are "coming back"!
Thank you, thank you, Francisca. I need to know that.

I love to see the rape fields - but I would love even more to see the storks high up the utility poles!

The yellow fields are "summer" so wonderful to the sky!
The storks and their nests are exotic in a way and makes one happy :)
Greetings from Budapest :)

I love to see (and smell) the fields of rape, but the hayfever sufferers tend not to agree. Safe enough in a photo though :)

I do love those yellow fields! Such a lovely contrast to the gray skies! I'm so glad the storks are making a comeback! We do tend to destroy so much of the beauty in our world -- glad so many of those things have such incredible resilience! Marvelous capture for the day, Francisca! Enjoy your weekend!!

The first storks I ever saw were nesting in the chimneys of a small town in Hungary. Thanks for reminding me.

So glad to see the storks back again. If there were none left, who would bring the babies?

That's a vibrant yellow in your first photo! Wow! Glad the storks are back, too. You know something is not right when birds start to disappear!

Hope you're having a wonderful weekend!

An unlikely place to find a nest. Looks like a big nest.

The yellow field is simply amazing! Sorry to hear about the storks. Men is always causing a mess in nature!
