Z is for Zimbabwe

Okay, I am cheating a bit today. Maybe not just a bit.

The challenge at ABC Wednesday is the letter Z, a tough one. So what I offer you is a stone sculpture by a Master Zimbabwean sculptor in the park surrounding Burg Lichtenstein in Maria Enzersdorf not too far from Vienna.

The medieval castle sitting on a crag overlooking the Vienna Woods was originally built in the 12th century. It was destroyed twice by the Ottomans (Turks) in the 16th century and later rebuilt in 1884.

Austria, 2011

What do you think of the sculpture? [Click on it for a closer look.]

Check out the other links... I'm sure others could do better with Z!

It's interesting, but I would surely like a closer look to see details.

I agree w Fredamans.

And I don't think it's a cheat, FWIW.

There are a group of Zimbabwean sculptors who belong to Zimsculpt who travel and create their works of art in a garden setting over a period of several weeks. I believe they are in in southern England and Vancouver this summer. When they were at the Royal Botanical gardens here a few years ago it was fascinating to see the works as they were being created and wondering how they would turn out!

It's interesting, I like the different textures in the stone.

I agree with Karen, I like the different textures in the stone! Great capture for the Z Day, Francisca! Enjoy!

Even with the photo enlarged, I could tell there were a lot of details I was missing in the statue. It must have been fascinating to see it in person.
"Overlooking the Vienna woods" sounds so sweet and peaceful, doesn't it? I'm sure it wasn't, when the castle was being destroyed and re-destroyed in the 16th century, however.

I think this was a good choice. I sure enjoyed the read, and looking at the statue up close.

I love it, and I think it's a bit Picasso-like. I enlarged for a good look, and even though it's only a photograph, the sculpture evoked a great deal of emotion. very very nice Francisca. I'm a fan.

I rather like the sculpture. It's graceful and has a lot of movement.

It's a very intriguing sculpture and I'd love to see it for myself. One thing I think I see is that the figure is holding a unicorn. But maybe my imagination is working overtime. lol

It looks quite cool but a bit out of place?

I couldn't come up with a post for "Z".

The sculpture is fascinating. I could see a couple of faces and perhaps an animal or two.

Would be interesting to see it up close.

Thanks for sharing.

My initial reaction is that I don't like it but on closer inspection I can see that it says a lot - sorrow, pondering, shock/dismay, self-restraint - I'd like to see it for myself.
