Count Dracula's Castle

The character in Bram Stoker's Gothic novel Dracula, published 1897, was based on the real life chilling personality of Vlad the Impaler (1431-1476). Vlad's is a complex history of power and ugly revenge, and space does not permit a fair recounting; so if it interests you, you can check out the stories, real and fictional, here.

Yet the castle described in the classic book was based on this fortress in Bran, a few hours drive north of Bucharest, where Vlad never lived. Nonetheless, it is now nicknamed Dracula's Castle.

 Transylvania, 2011

Have you read the book? A friend cajoled me to read it in the 80s and it's a heckuva compelling story. Having now seen Bran Castle, inside and outside, I am tempted to reread the novel.

My best shot of the exterior was this pretty view from behind with a little footbridge, so I join the bridge hunters at Sunday Bridges and Scenic Sunday

You won't fine me sleeping overnight in that castle!
Every time I hear Transylvania I think Dracula.

So everyone's instinct, like Dina's, is right. I remember now about Vlad the Impaler but wouldn't have thought of him if you hadn't mentioned him. However, we all immediately think "Transylvania - Dracula"!
Truth might be stranger than fiction, but fiction can be stronger than history to the average person.
Thanks for all your beautiful photos, Francisca, and for sharing your knowledge.

Dracula is one of those names that is so iconic that it seems as if I have read the story and I knew the bit about Vlad... but in reality I have not actually read the book. Though being so close to Vlad's castle, I would probably want to read more.

I have the same reaction as Dina. I've read and watched Dracula many times though. Horrid fascination.

Nice! I was hoping you had this picture. Vlad seems like a creepy guy but it makes an interesting story after all these years.
Awesome castle!

A great shot, I love the texture in the photo. Great building - very interesting but I think I will stay under the trees, walk along the bridge and enjoy the view from there :). Maybe braw the castle from a shady spot. Happy Weekend!

Have read and seen countless version of the stories and the castle does look impressive and though not scary enough in the daytime..but nightime is another matter!

Beautiful shot of a castle that looks like it should belong to Dracula.

The little bridge is dwarfed by that imposing structure.

That castle deserves amore substantial bridge.
I was hoping you would get to see this place and share it with us!

Not my favorite genre, although I have liked some vampire literature. However, that castle really captures the imagination, and is visually remarkable. The angles of the roofline are unique and evocative. Do you see other castles with similar slants to the roof, or it it just this one?

I read Dracula sometime last year, I had a hard time finishing it.

Great photos.

I think I've seen photos of this place before from a different angle, but I like this one best, especially as it is composed with the wee bridge in the front!

Never had much interest in Dracula. Probably 'cause I knew enough scary characters!
