Generations of Chinese poets and painters have called Guilin “the finest scenery under heaven.”
Traditional Chinese brush painting |
During his visit to the area in 1979, Henry Kissinger, US Secretary of State at the time, commented: "Before l came here l thought the Chinese landscape paintings were but the romantic creation of painters, but now having seen the landscape… l realize they are realistic genuine portrayals."
There isn't much that can surpass the serenity of softly floating down the Yulong (Meeting the Dragon) River on a simple bamboo raft (which you can see here) surrounded by magnificent limestone pinnacles veiled in a gentle mist… “merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.”

Amazing, I see what you see in this moment.
Thank you,
Dianne
Thanks for the simplicity that is China - not Beijing and the big cities, but the real China.
Like a myth. Beautiful photo, too.
Wow, that place is real?! It's exquisite.
Thank you for your honesty on my photo :)
Gorgeous! Were you waiting until the biker was at that spot? Because the photo really is beautiful, like a painting :D
I love the photo and the story! Great post.
happy Sunday to you:)
No wonder I thought the painting looks Chinese. I also posted a bridge, taken by my husband. Hopefully next time, I will post mine. LOL
I don't know much about China, but I wonder how they would keep most of their country this way, with that kind of economy and population. The country is immense, but we have seen this before...
magnifique b&w, une tres belle athmosphere
How gentle and lovely. It does look like a Chinese painting.
It's very interesting! The bridge is beautiful,I like the picture, it's a postcard from so different place!

Any image with these limestone pinnacles makes my day! I've only seen then in the Andaman Sea, Thailand. Gorgeous shot, Francisca!
Amazing atmosphere! thanks for sharing.
Lovely post and I like the photo in B&W.
I'm with those who thought these 'scapes were mythical and imaginative until I began to see a few photos - very few until you came along.
That's a long bridge. I see the cyclist. Love the soft mountain background.
That's especially good enlarged. It could almost be a painting itself.
It is just like a mythical place.
BTW, how do you travel so much? You looks like always on the move around the world :)
The Chinese landscape depicted in their paintings is pretty unique, and extremely beautiful. I've been to a place like this outside Beijing during my first trip, but I can't remember what's it's called. Your photo is truly beautiful. That lone cyclist is a nice touch too.
The misty mountains in the background look so surreal.
It is very beautiful, especially when enlarged.
This is gorgeous!
You managed to get the cyclist in eactly the best position.
Simply beautiful, Francisca. I love black and white photos, and used to like to watch photographers work in the darkroom, where they knew how to get the very best from the negative onto the paper.
Like another world, this misty, mysterious place.
It looks rather like where one of the James Bond movies was filmed...
