Decorated Door

 Kathmandu, 2010

I found the old wood-carved door on its own already beautiful. Decorated with bright flowers it created a warm welcome.

This was the entrance to a trade hall for Nepalese hand crafted products intended for export. Unfortunately, not many international buyers came to this distant source.

Pashupatinath Temple Reflected

Kathmandu, Nepal, 2010

This is a very small portion of the Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most significant Hindu temples of Lord Shiva in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site, reflected in Bagmati River.

For James' Weekend Reflections. Details better seen enlarged.

Love Is in the Air

I'm a few hours late to greet you for Valentine's Day, but love works for me 24/7 365 days a year. You too?

To get you in the mood for this theme, right click and open in a new tab to listen to this sweet tune.

Kathmandu, 2010

Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead. The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and a richness to life that nothing else can bring. - Oscar Wilde
As sweet and musical
As bright Apollo's lute, strung with his hair;
And when Love speaks, the voice of all the gods
Makes heaven drowsy with the harmony. - W. Shakespeare
There is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness.- Friedrich Nietzsche
Accept the things to which fate binds you, and love the people with whom fate brings you together, but do so with all your heart. - Marcus Aurelius

Moving It in Kathmandu

The City Daily Photo is a community of bloggers around the globe who post daily about their cities. Being an avid traveler, it's an idea I both admire and enjoy. They do an awesome job of describing their cities, both in words and in photos. There are too many for me to follow them all, but there are a good number of sites I visit regularly.

It thrills me to learn about distant cities like Astoria on the west side of the USA and Ocala on the east, East Gwillimbury in Canada, Livorno in Italy, Oeiras in Portugal, Versailles in France, Sydney in Australia, Saltaire in the UK, Jerusalem Hills in Israel, Tokorozawa in Japan, and of course our Manila right here... just to mention a FEW... Every city blogger has a very unique style and their own creative way to see and present their city. It's truly fabulous. I'm hooked.

On the first of each month, the community follows a theme. Today's theme is transportation. You can see thumbnails of the participating City Daily Photo bloggers here.

Well, I hope no one minds, but I thought I'd play along today.

I seem to be on a roll of threes. My transportation photos were taken earlier this year in Nepal, where I captured three modes of movement on the same spot.

Sadhu in Kathmandu

A sadhu is a Hindu man (and the very occasional woman) who has chosen to forgo the physical pleasures of life in order to further their spiritual discipline to obtain "moksha" (liberation).  This ascetic - or holy man - I met in Durbar Square in Kathmandu willingly posed for my camera.

His ochre-colored outfit symbolizes his renunciation. Yet I thought there was enough red here to qualify for Mary's Ruby Tuesday... don't you agree?

I is for Instruments

A mere five kilometers south-west of Kathmandu, on top of a hill, is the small ancient town of Kirtipur, a center of Newari culture. The Newa people are the indigenous people of Nepal's Kathmandu Valley.

I had the good fortune earlier this year to visit the town during its Newa Culture Food Festival. The festival included beautiful music played on a range of instruments.

Street Vendor in Red

Kathmandu, 2010

Yesterday was Labor Day in the USA. My heart goes out to all the workers of the world who struggle for a living wage.

Browns in a Buddhist Temple

Earlier this year my friend Deepak in Kathmandu took us to this tiny temple full of little treasures. I was peacefully taking it all in when a group of pilgrims from Tibet arrived to do the rounds of the prayer wheels, a ritual to spread spiritual blessings and invoke good karma in their next life. They seemed not to mind me at all as I continued to photograph as inconspicuously as I could.

Kathmandu, 2010

I don't know what this fearsome looking bronze creature represents, but from its well worn paws I surmise that touching them brings earthly luck.

This Buddhist woman is using her prayer beads to count her mantras, much like a Catholic counts prayers on a rosary.

This post will have too many photos, but I couldn't resist sharing this baby. Here on the motionless prayer wheel you can also see the markings of the most important mantra in Tibetan script, Om mani padme hum:

Each prayer wheel contains a roll of paper inscribed with multiples of this mantra. Spinning the wheels, always clockwise, is believed to have the same effect as saying or thinking the mantra, the aim being to develop compassion and wisdom and to get closer to reaching enlightenment.

Before leaving the temple, each pilgrim rang the bell:

This handsome man was in the temple when I arrived and when I left, perhaps the caretaker. His cap makes me think he is Muslim, and that would not be unusual, as in Nepal, according to Deepak, the two main religions co-exist peacefully and inter-marriage is not rare.

Help

Kathmandu, 2010

Half of us - over 3 billion humans - live on less than US$2.50 a day.

The poorest 40 percent among us accounts for 5 percent of global income. The richest 20 percent accounts for three-quarters of world income.

Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn’t happen.

When will we ever learn? When do we start to share? Help!

HELP was the chosen theme for Theme Thursday. The link will take you to more links with creative interpretations of the theme.

Seeing Red in Nepal

Kathmandu, 2010

In Manila today the weather is gray and wet. The vibrant colors in this street scene in Kathmandu I shot in February brighten my day...

...and it is my contribution to the meme Ruby Tuesday hosted by Mary. Click on the link to find more links to creative shots of red.
