Little Princess in Red

She's all dressed up to visit the mosque, this little princess in red.

Delhi, 2010

Okay, maybe her dress is closer to orange, but let's not quibble this season to be jolly, okay? I still think she's a gem and I'm linking with Mary's Ruby Tuesday.

J is for Juice

What's your favorite freshly squeezed fruit juice?

Delhi, 2010

You're sure to get it here at this colorful juice stand.

And J is the letter at Jenny's Alphabe-Thursday.

Mine is yellow mango. Or maybe grapefruit. Hmmm...

H is for Humayun

Preface June 11, 2012: This post is now linked to the community at Taphophile Tragics. If you have a fascination for tombs, graves, burial gounds and the histories of the humans who were "put to rest" in them, check out this meme.

:::

I introduced Humayun's tomb two days ago, but there is more to show and tell, and since the letter for Alphabe-Thursday this week is H, it felt fitting to continue.

Humayun was the second emperor of the Mughal era in India that began in the early sixteenth century. He was the favorite son of Babur, the first monarch, who could trace his ancestry directly to Tamerlane and Genghis Khan, two great Asian conquerors. Humayun ruled for 26 years and left an empire of nearly one million square kilometers.

Quoting from wiki - notes in brackets mine:
He is best remembered today for his great tomb, built by his widow after his death between 1562 and 1571. The ultimate model for Humayun's tomb is the Gur-e Amir in Samarkand (Tamerlane's tomb in Uzbekistan), and it is best-known as a precursor to the Taj Mahal in style. However, in its striking composition of dome and iwan (vaulted hall), and its imaginative use of local materials (including the red sandstone), it is one of the finest Mughal monuments in India in its own right.

Here are a few more of my images of this splendid piece of architecture and cultural heritage site. Photos enlarge when clicked.

[MyWorld] Portrait of a Redhead

She is a groundskeeper at Humayun's tomb in Delhi. I wondered what her world was to her, working on the grounds of this over 400-year-old site, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, seeing visitors from all over the world every single day.

 Delhi, 2010

This was a small side entrance, and she seemed to be as fascinated by me as I was by her. She did not mind my taking pictures of her.

A long view of the architectural splendor.

This is linked with MyWorld Tuesday and Ruby Tuesday.

Riding a Red Horse

This handsome young man on a red "horse" was dancing to Indian music at a New Delhi trade show I attended in February. His task was to bring to visitors' attention the additional exhibitors housed in tents beside the main venue. He sure got my attention!

New Delhi, 2010

I thought he'd make a splendid offering to Mary's Ruby Tuesday. Don't you? Click the link for more links to REDs.

Please feed the birds...

I won't swear to it... I've surely been known to be wrong before and, in the face of reasonable evidence, will readily admit it... but I do think this woman I saw sitting on a busy, dusty, dirty, noisy, hot and overwhelmingly stinky street in Old Delhi was selling various kinds of bird seeds. In the minutes that I watched her, I did not see anyone pop anything bought from her into a mouth. My guess is further strengthened by there being a mosque across the street:  feeding the pigeons in sight of Allah is considered a form of repentance.

Whatever she is selling, this woman, so elegant in her simple way, and her wares make a colorful mosaic of mellow yellow, rich red, bright blue and pale purple.

Gold and Diamonds for Sale

Old Delhi, 2010

This photo is really just for a chuckle.

As my travel companions and I were wandering the streets after visiting the beautiful Red Fort in Old Delhi a few months ago, we found ourselves on this very busy street. There are many things I could mention here, but after the monstrous wires, what caught my attention was the shop with the neon sign on the right.

Would you spend your money on serious jewellery here?

[NB. If you click on the photo you can see the shop sign better.]
