Breakfast

I consider myself having a rather broad and adventurous palate (up to a point). But even after 27 years of living here, I still cannot stomach the Asian breakfast.

Filipinos typically start their day with a plate of tapsilog: meat/fish with garlic rice and a fried egg. Favorite meats include tapa (cured beef), corned beef, spam, longganisa or chorizo sausage, and tocino (bacon). Fried marinated bangus (milkfish) is popular, too.

Manila, 2012

This restaurant - Big Plate - is currently offering a special: a standard range of tapsilog versions with a cup of coffee for just over US$2 - all day. I wonder whether the brewed coffee is the native grown kape barako.

They make it look appetizing. But no meat or fried before noon for me! I'll stick to my organic cereal or oatmeal with fruit. And of course, coffee!

How do you break your fast?

Oatmeal and fruit for breakfast is a favorite breakfast for me, though I love to try different things just one time when I get the chance to travel. Those breakfasts look really interesting.

Hi Francisca, i noticed long ago that your name is just how we spell ours. I usually think that a foreigner should spell it as Francesca, till now i wonder why your name is spelled that way! Lol. We normally have fried meat or fish and rice for breakfast, yes plus coffee! But in the Visayas the traditional breakfast is the tinola or tinowa, that is stewed fish or chicken with lots of soup. I can eat that too if there's not choice.

But that tapsilog and so many 'silogs', i don't like! I don't even like longganisa. But i cannot stay sober till noon when i only have fruits or vegies without carbs for breakfast.

Hey there! I'm with you! That looks a bit rich for mornings. I usually start my day with a piece of two of fruit (or juice) and then some coffee. I'm not turning down any bacon if it's available though...

Looks really hearty! I usually start my day with some coffee, cereal and maybe a piece of toast with jam. I could probably tolerate the Asian breakfast on occasion but I would definitely not care for garlic first thing in the morning.

My sign is HERE.

This looks like a great lunch. Garlic for breakfast just isn't on my menu. In fact, food in general is not that appetizing to me in the morning. Generally, coffee, juice, and maybe toast is all I can handle until noon. Then it's "Katie, bar the door!"

i usually eat breakfast like this when i'm NOT home.:p i'm not really a breakfast person (because i woke up late LOL). at home, i start my day with coffee and pandesal, cereal or oatmeal or just fruits when i'm "on diet".

It always surprises me what people in other countries consider a 'normal' breakfast. It makes me realise that what I think of as normal may not be quite as normal as I think!

While this particular menu does not look all that appetizing top me, I do find I can many things not normally considered breakfast foods. this is likely because of my erratic work schedule. leftover pizza is good, as is soup. but oatmeal is likely the best option.

I guess it's very nutricious, and breakfast is supposed to be our main meal "eat like a King" for breakfast. I have a coffee kick-start, and then cereal (and maybe another coffee). Porridge often in winter, and packet cereal when it's not so cold.

I'm with you Francisca... I'd stay away from Asian breakfast also. I would be heading to the nearest McDonald's for Egg McMuffin.

One cup of coffee weekday mornings, two on Sunday mornings. Usually cereal with fruit, yogurt, almond milk, sprinkled with a tbs. of brewer's yeast, and then drizzled with a spoon of honey. On weekends I might fix French toast, sometimes a breakfast sausage with eggs, it just depends what we have at the time and what I feel like fixing that's different and more special for Sunday morning.

When I am at home it is usually coffee and yoghourt.
but I do love to eat a full breakfast when I am out at a restaurant.
Not so sure about this offering, though!

Oatmeal is my favourite breakfast so that's usually what I eat. And yes, I always have one or two cups of coffee. :)

A great post- I know what you mean. I struggled in Malaysia with a local breakfast. My choice is always vegan: muesli in apple juice, toast and peanut butter, orange juice and a black coffee.

Never mind a broad palate, if you ate that everyday you would soon have a broad everything!

Sometimes I'll add a Tbsp of peanut butter on thin toast to my fruit and cereal. That's about as adventurous as I get in the morning.

After living in the PI for seven years and being married to a filipino for thirty-seven years my husband has adopted what you called a broad and adventurous palate. But, I'm afraid that I could not eat some of the items he enjoys. Thankfully, he still prefers a standard western breakfast of bacon and eggs and occasionally hotcakes.

Dinner leftovers and/or the usual Filipino breakfast with rice during the weekdays (tapa, chorizo, danggit, paksiw, ham). The children need to bring lunch to school and the help prepares their viand and the what's left is shared as breakfast by whoever is still at home. If people are running late, cereals and fresh fruits. Weekend breakfasts are more elaborate because my wife can prepare it at a more leisurely pace. BTW, I've seen big plate but have never tried it.

I'm like you, Francisca, could not stomach this for breakfast.
