Monday Mural IV - Visayas I

Mural paintings in Philippine towns are often created as part of local competitions designed to encourage urban beautification and/or awareness raising. I've noticed that often there is a theme to a group of paintings; popular ones being environmental protection, family values, education, and ethical development.

Stretches of fence wall are donated by municipal governments or private companies to organizers who entice art students to participate with cash prizes. The quality of these murals span the spectrum from wonderful to what is that!?

This Monday's mural is in the Visayas, one of the three principal geographical divisions of the Philippines, the other two being Luzon to the north and Mindanao to the south. On this map, the Visayas is in blue.

Walking around in the cities of Cebu and Dumaguete last week I spotted a good number of wall paintings and I photographed some to share with you on Mondays when a handful of bloggers play along. So this series is called Visayas.

I thought this mural in Cebu was one of the better ones I saw, with a strong feel of traditional Filipino subject and painting. Lots to look at [better enlarged].

The Cebu mural looks very well done. I'm impressed that the Philippines are encouraging murals with themes such as family values, environmental protection and ethical development.

All the best in 2012! (I may be repeating myself, but I want you to know that I wish you a wonderful year.)

In the 70s, the Filipinnos were very good group singers. They toured Malaysia. Do they still do it?

Can you imagine, I have 8 siblings, my husband has 11, my dad has 13. That's how I get so many people to tap my photos from. They are all very happy to let me use their photos,. LOL

Hi Francisca!
This is a beautiful mural by a talented artist.
Most of the murals that I see in NYC were painted as memorials after a community member dies an unnatural death. In some instances murals are painted by businesses to try to deflect graffiti.

Thanks for letting me know about the "Sunday Bridges' meme
-- I didn't know about it!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Francisca! I am glad you were able to get somewhere this holidays. Which part of Dumaguete you have been? We were in Forest Camp in Valencia last year and i saw on TV it was devastated by the last typhoon Sendong. I am glad you are showing the world some artistic aspects of our people. I know we are very artistic people, turning a lot of beautiful works of art, considering we are so very deprived of life's essentials. Imagine if we are more privileged with finances! Or putting it the other way, circumstances gave us the talent in lieu of capacity to pay!

P.S. Have you seen the mural at the left side of EDSA after the Magallanes MRT Station going to Quezon City? I love it and wish the artist continue to do all the expanse of that wall onward. I bet he is the professional one unlike those you saw in Cebu and Dumaguete.

Oh dear, another post I forgot to comment on. Maybe I was rendered speechless by the details in this. Yes, that will be my excuse.

Hi. Palawan is part of Luzon, so it should be green in the map. Kindly correct the map, it can be misleading. Thanks! :)

By the way, great blog you have! :)

Hello adundunis, and thanks visiting and for the compliment.

I have learned that the island province of Palawan used to be a province belonging to an administrative region of Luzon, but it was transferred to Region VI in the Visayas in 2005.
