[MyWorld] Flower for Women Power

Today is the 100-year anniversary of International Women's Day. I join the many around the globe celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. 

As I was walking around the central district of Bucharest today, I saw flower vendors on nearly every street corner. It is perceptibly a day that matters in Romania. Many women get the day off work and I even received a lovely white freesia from our lunch waiter.

    The hyacinths in your second photo look so pretty. The flower seller has gone to such trouble to arrange them thus.
    I haven't heard much about International Women's Day - it's not much vaunted, I fear. In UK all the recent publicity seems to be going to Comic Relief or Red Nose Day as it's commonly known.
    Nice to see you - are you not on your travels yet?

    Beautiful, Francesca, and how wonderful the waiter gave you a flower. If I hadn't posted the logo on my Facebook page, my husband wouldn't have known what day it is. So, now he knows, but doesn't care.
    It's wonderful to know some women got the day off work, and are appreciated.

    Your first two shots of the beautiful flowers are lovely, but the last one with the lady is awesome. I just love the look on her face and the way she is dressed...so real...nothing fake about her...no pretenses...simple beauty. Lovely capture.

    We are doing the same theme. Aren't you glad that you are born in this era. Imagine even fifity years ago, many Chinese women had bound feet, The golden lotus.

    Wow-- congratulations to all of us and thanks to our foremothers! (a day late and a dollar short as usual) The special day passed unnoticed here as far as I know. Hooray for Bucharest. The flowers are beautiful. Sounds as if you are enjoying your working visit.

    Perfect timing for me. I (coincidentally) watched Ken Burns's "Not for Ourselves Alone" last night about Elizabeth Cady Stanton (who???) and Susan B. Anthony. I am ashamed to say I could not have told you that much about Susan B. Anthony, and it seems I'm not alone in not knowing who Elizabeth was. They should at least have had equal billing in history, and probably more than S.B.A. had. What a fascinating woman and fascinating story! How many of us remember that it took about 73 years for women to get the vote in the U.S. after the first Declaration was presented? It was a life's work of these two women and the younger women who followed.

    Once again this year, I was very disappointed to note that Women's Day means almost nothing in this country. I would not have know if I hadn't seen photos on some of the blogs.

    And the Republicans in our government are working quite actively against women's rights! Sickos!
