K is for Kimono

Are these middle-aged women I saw in full traditional garments - or kimono - former geisha or are they just dressed up for a photo op on a glorious Sunday at the temple in Kyoto? I didn't care; I thought they and their rich and colorful silk attire were simply fabulous!

  1. Marvelous, colorful post for the K Day, Francisca! I worked for a Japanese company for a number of years before I retired and I so enjoy getting to know more about their culture! Your photos are terrific! Hope your week is going well! Enjoy!

  2. Beautiful shots! When my parents went to Japan, they were very impressed with the people and their culture. My mother bequeathed me four Japanese ladies done in Spanish lladro and I just love them. Two are in kimonos. Have a lovely week! :D

  5. Fabulous, Francisca, as always.
I would think these women were never geisha, but I am always willing to admit I could be wrong.

  8. Oh! I love those K pictures today. They are so beautiful, who cares if they are middle age, if we live long enough we all reach middle age. The Kimonos are just so lovely.
    Fabulous choice for K day.

  11. There is simply nothing quite like this in the world, is there? These are wonderful shots of the women. Look at the interesting treatment of how the paint ends on their upper backs. I'd never seen this.

  12. I'm always in awe of the Geisha and Maiko I see in Kyoto! You've captured the beauty of both the women and the kimono here! Just gorgeous!
I'm not an expert but from their facial expressions and the way they hold themselves, I don't think they are Geisha...although many choose not to marry and continue to perform. I'd love to have a chance to be a Geisha for a day, even just to take photos like this :D

  13. I met two 1/2 japanese girls on Sunday. I asked if they watch Oshin TV series and they didn't know.

  15. A great contrast with the derelict ruins of yesterday. What can I say? The kimonos are gorgeous and I don't really care either if these are former geishas, city clerks or saleswomen...

  17. An extremely colourful attire, and very well depicted.

PS But it must be difficult to walk in those shoes :-)

  19. Beautiful intricacy are the words that came to mind. Attention has been paid to every little detail. The kimonos are dazzling, of course, but one can see that everything about their costume is perfectly done -- not a hair out of place.

    Lovely photos!

  20. Such beautiful garments - it must take a long time to dress in these costumes but how wonderful they look when the transformation is complete.

  22. These are cool! I remember my Japanese classmate, she gave me a kimono and I wore it near the beach here in Taipei just for pictorial. Wishing I could wear that once again with matching make-up (like I would like geisha) :)
    Have a nice day!
