Court in Session!

Dapitan, 2008

One of my pet peeves about living in Asia is the incessant and often futile use of horns. Motorcycles, cars, buses, trucks; one louder than the other. The noise pollution can sometimes get under my skin.

Mostly to no avail, I've seen prohibitions against using one's horn around schools, hospitals, even just residential areas. So perhaps I'd be forgiven if I thought this sign told me I couldn't honk near a court house.

How fun to learn that the only court on the block was a tennis court!

This is for Lesley's Signs, Signs.

  1. Funny about the "court!" Not so fun about all the noise. I wouldn't like that, either.

I've seen areas here (such as when entering a small community) where the highway department has posted signs telling the semi-truck drivers to refrain from using their Jake Brake/air brakes, because they are so loud/noisy. It would be quite unsettling to have them wake you from sound sleep.

  2. Great fun! I guess the tennis players don't like the noise either.

  3. I don't suppose anyone takes any notice! People are people the world over.

  4. Yes, I observe the same when in Asia, Francisca. The use of car horns here in Australia is so rare so when you do hear one you definitely there is a valid emergency or warning. I wonder if the tennis players have a quieter game since the sign went up?

  5. Interesting find Francisca. I'm holding back on commenting about the funny thoughts going through my mind ]:->

  6. Oh this is a good one! We don't seem to have many horn honkers here, either, so when I do hear one, I just about jump out of my skin!

  7. Hilarious! Strange how the first thought is a legal court! Perhaps the sign intends that double meaning? Could be effective!

  8. I like the symbol of the horn as if the person was in a band or something! Too funny! But it gets the point across!

  9. That's a great sign. I did not know that the horn was used excessively over that way. I was just complaining about hearing it a little too much around here.

  10. OH, thanks for the giggle! I love it that the only court was a tennis one. ;))

  11. I was thinking that there must be a 24 hour court for all those lawbreakers....

  13. Funny to hear that the tennis court requires silence.

    Noise pollution is a bane.

  14. LOL yeah, a tennis court needs complete silence! just the other night, a TV reporter asked a jeepney driver what this road sign (no words) means, and he had no idea!:p no wonder everybody's honking their horns.

  15. I love the horn symbol!
tennis does require more silence than justice I suppose :)

  16. Great sign, I couldn't agree more. I have been told that thoughtlessly blowing a horn could be construed as 'road rage' here in the states. I'm not sure if it's true, I don't use mine much.

  18. I wouldn't like all that noise either. Nothing upsets a good serve like loud honking horns (I guess)...I'd be more worried about the hospitals tho.

  19. I found your story very humorous. Being from a family with thirteen children I learned to tune out noise at a very young age. I probably would not notice all your noise but leave a light on and it will drive me crazy.
